Coordinating & Fundraising

  • Meet with people who will use and maintain the garden. Establish goals and plans. Assess wants and needs.
  • Form committees for garden planning and construction, fundraising, communication, and public relations.
  • Give your garden a name!
  • Make a budget, secure grants and donations, and work with sponsors to get supplies for the garden.

Designing

  • Your garden should be near a water source and be easily accessible for planting, maintenance and harvesting.
  • Locate your garden where it will get at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight (morning sun is best). Remember, the angle and intensity of the sun changes with the seasons.
  • Sketch your plan to-scale. Include the number and size of your plots, and pathways as needed. Include room for storage and composting (if applicable).
  • Decide what to plant. Consider plant varieties, plant spacing, and using vertical space.
